Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, we're thrilled to announce that this year's Toy Drive exceeded all expectations! Together, we've brightened the holidays for countless children in need.

🤝 Partnering with UrbanPromise, we distributed joy and smiles to families facing various challenges. Your donations made it possible for us to provide toys, spreading warmth and cheer during this festive season.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed and made a difference. Your kindness has created lasting memories for children who may not have experienced the magic of the holidays otherwise.

The Effect of Mass Incarceration on Women and Girls

Blank-Template-Charts-Wide.jpg

Between 1980 and 2019, the number of incarcerated women increased by more than 700%, rising from a total of 26,378 in 1980 to 222,455 in 2019

What a successful event! Thank you to Governor Jim McGreevy and the whole New Jersey Reentry Corporation team for the work you do and for allowing the HEAL4Her team to be a part of it!

Most importantly, a HUGE thank you to everyone that took the time out to support and donate to the HEAL4Her Drive. The items donated to recently released individuals will help them get back on their feet and allow for a fresh start!

Who We Are

Our mission at HEAL4Her is to improve health education access and literacy by empowering women with the knowledge and support needed to make life changing and life saving healthcare decisions, both during and after incarceration.

Mary Wollstonecraft

"Strengthen the female mind by enlarging it, and there will be an end to blind obedience"

Nelson Mandela

"No one truly knows a nation until one has been inside its jails. A nation should not be judged by how it treats its highest citizens but its lowest ones"

A world where members from every community, most importantly vulnerable ones, have access to proper
health care, improving
quality of life for all

Welcome

HEAL4Her, which stands for Health Equity Access and Literacy 4 Her, recognizes the importance of health equity, access and literacy for all populations – but really focuses on incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women because, when we looked at those populations which we could most impact through our efforts and resources, this was it. As we looked further into this particular population, we recognized that there is a need to focus on trauma care, rehabilitation, comprehensive pre-release planning, and effective post-release case management in order to positively influence health outcomes. Studies have shown that if we meaningfully address these issues, it may ultimately lead to decreased female prison populations and lower rates of recidivism.

About 6 to 10% of female inmates in US correctional facilities are pregnant and many lack access to the necessary prenatal care, screenings, and social support required for a safe, healthy, and comfortable pregnancy and delivery. In NJ, inmates are required by state law to pay for their care, and at the federal level, Medicaid doesn’t cover incarcerated individuals – leading to challenges when they are released. These are just some of the issues that HEAL4Her hopes to address through our advocacy and policy work.
