Incarcerated Mothers: A Staggering 80% of Women Jailed Each Year are Mothers

Currently, the most basic human needs and health rights of women prisoners is not being met. Mothers who give birth while serving time are separated from their infants almost immediately which inevitably leads to higher rates of postpartum depression. Among the fastest growing demographic in prison, incarcerated women are more likely to have had a history of mental illness, drug addition, domestic abuse and sexual trauma. By ignoring the growing issue surrounding the lack of health care education for women, reentry rates will inevitably continue to rise. Through our work at Heal 4 Her, we seek to empower incarcerated women with the information needed to make informed decisions regarding their heath and well-being.
